Spain: Neighbours create mask manufacturing network during coronavirus outbreak

Residents of Sentmenat, a town in Barcelona of about 9,000 inhabitants, organised a network to manufacture face masks to help people who are fighting against the coronavirus or are forced to continue working during the state of alarm. Footage filmed on Monday shows volunteers manufacturing masks with material donated by local companies and individuals, which will later be distributed among health... Еще workers and public servants. «We mainly have requests from hospitals, from nursing homes, we also have requests from the 061 service [local emergencies],” said Marc Verneda, Mayor of Sentmenat. «There is also demand from different municipalities in the region, in the area, and also from some companies,» he added, although they have not yet been able to meet this demand. He also explained that the initiative arose from the «need» of the «priority and emergency services» for masks, so the city council decided to ask the neighbours for help. «The city council asked us if we could sew some kind of masks for our fellow police officers, social services and similar. And obviously we offered the entire workshop and the neighbourhood association [to] collaborate,” explained Francisco Jose Serrano, member of the mask production chain. He stated that no more than three people can be in the workshop at the same time due to the risk of infection, but reportedly more than 100 people are working from their homes. The initiative is being carried out in other towns and neighbourhoods throughout the country. Spain has registered 33,089 positive cases of coronavirus throughout the country, in addition to 2,182 deaths, according to data provided by the Ministry of Health. There are 2,355 people admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICU) throughout the country.
