Spain: Mourinho opts for settlement in €3.3 million tax fraud case

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho settled his tax fraud case with the Spanish government during a hearing at a court in the Spanish capital of Madrid, Friday. Upon leaving the hearing, the Portuguese gave a statement to the press affirming that he «left the country with the information and the belief that [his] tax situation was legal.» He confirmed that he had now paid the Spanish... Еще government and the case, relating to his time as Real Madrid manager between 2010 and 2013, is officially closed. Mourinho stood accused of owing close to €3.3 million (US $3.8 million) in undeclared image rights. There have been numerous high profile investigations into the fiscal arrangements of footballers in Spain in recent years. FC Barcelona's Argentine captain Lionel Messi was punished for tax evasion, as were his compatriots Angel Di Maria and Javier Mascherano, while a case against Real's Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo is still open although the four time Ballon d'Or winner denies any wrongdoing.
