Spain: MEPs visit Valley of the Fallen to denounce Francoist monument

A cross-party group of Members of the European Parliament (MEP) visited the Valle de los Caidos (Valley of the Fallen) monument near Madrid on Friday, to denounce the controversial monument which has come to symbolise Francosim. The cross-party group included parliamentarians from the European United Left-Nordic Green Left, Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe group and Greens-European Free Alliance (Greens-EFA). The Valley of the Fallen was conceived by dictator Francisco Franco to honour and bury those who died during the Spanish Civil War. It remains controversial due to its use of Francoist symbols and having been constructed by Republican political prisoners.
