One of Madrid’s most famous nightclubs was emblazoned with a huge Spanish flag on Thursday as the battle for Catalan’s independence gripped the nation. The 21 metres wide and 14 metres long flag, which weigh almost 90 kilos, covered the complete exterior of Teatro Barcelo overlooking Madrid’s Plaza Colon square. The managers of the club explained the initiative was to display “a message of... Еще integration, far from any political connotation” over Catalonia’s independence. The giant flag triggered the curiosity of locals and tourists alike. Some residents defended the nightclub’s choice, supporting the “symbol of identity” while others underlined the potentially risky consequences such a statement could bring. The Spanish government is threatening to impose direct rule on Catalonia, which held an independence referendum on the 1st of October that Spain deemed illegal.
