Madrid's Puerta del Sol, one of the areas which typically sees the largest crowds in the Spanish capital, was half empty on Saturday morning.
Saturday was the first day of the 15-day state of emergency decreed by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. The Community of Madrid has also shut outdoor terraces and announced the closure of restaurants and bars throughout the region.

So far in Spain there have been 5,867 diagnosed cases, of which 135 have died and 193 have been discharged. In Madrid there have been 2,940 cases and 86 people have died.
