The Madrid City Council closed all the parks in the city, in order to avoid large crowds gathering and to try to stop the rapid spread of the coronavirus in the capital.
Footage shows local police officers and security guards asking people to leave Retiro Park, as well as preventing new people from entering, and finally closing the doors at 16:00 (15:00 GMT).
«At around 13:30 the mayor of... Еще Madrid [José Luis Martínez] Almeida tweeted that they were going to close the parks at 16:00. I was already inside, and a couple of hours later, at about 3 p.m., police cars started coming, saying they were going to close the park at 4 p.m. and that we were going to be evicted,» said Ricardo, a resident of Madrid.
Javier, another resident, said he had seen the police and security guards «arguing with some people» and that people were «quite angry» about the park being closed.
This measure was in addition to the ban on terraces and the closure of bars and restaurants in the region.
