Citizen activists have managed to stop the eviction of an 85-year-old man suffering from terminal cancer in Madrid.
Footage from Wednesday shows a mobilization called by the Madrid Tenants' Union blocking police from entering the building in the Lavapies district. The old man, Francisco Rodriguez, commonly known as Paco, was also seen thanking the dozens of activists for their action from the house's balcony.
According to local media, an investment fund linked to Francisco Franco's family bought the 50-square-meter house and refused to renew the tenant's contract despite his continued rent payments.
The judicial committee responsible for the case has indefinitely postponed the eviction, taking into account the man's vulnerable circumstance.
