Teachers and other school workers had to wait several hours in line, on Wednesday at the Virgen de la Paloma high school in Madrid, to be able to undergo COVID-19 tests before the beginning of the lessons.
The take-up of the offer of testing, which was made less than 24 hours in advance, exceeded forecasts, with thousands of teachers, janitors, cleaners, and cooks having to wait their turn in the sun, without water and without the possibility of keeping the safety distance.
“We have been here since nine in the morning and we still have to wait to enter, it is desperate,” explained Cynthia, a cleaning worker, adding that “those of us who are not infected are going to be infected here, because there is no safe distance.»
Finally, the Madrid Council of Education decided to suspend the tests given the crowds and the long lines.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, Spain has recorded 470,973 cases of coronavirus and 29,152 subsequent deaths.
