The people of Villanueva de la Serena in Badajoz celebrated Easter Sunday — as they do every year — by holding a race between statues of Jesus and the Virgin Mary. Thousands of people flocked to the town’s main square to watch the culmination of Holy Week, an important week in the Christian calendar including Palm Sunday, Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday. The... Еще ringing of the church bells marked the start of the ‘mini-race’, which is meant to signify the joy of Christians upon learning of the Lord’s resurrection. Members from two brotherhoods carried the statues aloft above the crowds. The festival in its current form dates back to the 18th century and has since been recognised for its cultural heritage.
