Spain: 'Independence declaration has political value' — pro-Catalan Popular Unity Candidacy

Members of the Candidatura d'Unitat Popular (CUP) Quim Arrufat stated that signing of Declaration of Independence only had «political value», speaking at the press conference, Barcelona, Tuesday. He stated that CUP deputies would request Catalan President Carles Puigdemont to announce a timeframe for negotiations with Madrid's government. «What we can't accept is to open an unlimited and... Еще undetermined time of negotiations and mediation without a time limit, because this would lead to eternalise it and leave the independence process hanging,» stressed Arrufat. According to him, Declaration of Independence «was not against the dialogue [with the Spanish government] but was a necessary step. It was a tool of internationalization and an essential tool to defend the negotiations as well as an attainable commitment to the people». Earlier on Tuesday, Puigdemont and members of Catalan Parliament signed a so-called 'declaration of independence', but postponed its implementation. The declaration has a symbolic meaning with no legislative backing, as members of the Parliament did not vote in order to approve the document. Catalonia held a referendum on October 1 to decide on the region's independence, however, the Spanish government deemed the action 'illegal' and 'unconstitutional'. An emergency session of the Parliament in Madrid is scheduled on morning, October 11.
