Spain: Govt. accepts German court decision on Puigdemont's extradition

Spanish government spokesperson Inigo Mendez de Vigo said that the decision of the German authorities to release former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont “made clear that he is not being persecuted politically but he is a fugitive of a penal cause”, during a press conference in Madrid on Friday. “As you already know, the government respects and accepts the courts’ decisions and we have never... Еще extracted any consequences from them. It was a decision of the Spanish Supreme Court with the German courts, so, in accordance with the principle of separation of powers that we respect, we will wait to see what happens. So this makes clear that Puigdemont is subjected to justice in German territory, since he escaped from the Spanish justice to avoid being subjected to it”, affirmed de Vigo. On Thursday, a German court ruled against Puigdemont’s extradition to Spain where he is wanted for sedition, rebellion and the misuse of public funds. The court agreed to set him free on bail pending a decision. Carles Puigdemont paid 75,000 euros ($92,000) for bail. Puigdemont was arrested by the German police en route to Belgium where he had been living in self-imposed exile.
