Spain: Former Catalan leaders request release from Supreme Court ahead of regional elections

Eight former Catalan cabinet members, including Jordi Sanchez and Jordi Cuixart, appeared before the Supreme Court in Madrid, Friday, to request their release ahead of regional elections. A Supreme Court decision on their possible release is expected by Monday. Media, protesters and police authorities gathered in front of the Supreme Court building. Vice President of OMNIUM Marcel Mauri was also... Еще present and affirmed that «the democratic, peaceful, Catalan movement, the independence movement, is a pacifist movement and it has always been.» The eight arrested Catalan leaders requested the Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena to grant their provisional release, arguing that they had already complied with Article 155 of the Constitution imposed by the Spanish government, by being released of their functions and calling a fresh round of elections. The eight former Catalan leaders were accused of rebellion, sedition and misappropriation of funds for their unilateral declaration for the Catalan independence process, along with the former Catalan leaders who remain in Brussels, including former Catalan President Carles Puigdemont, who await a decision on their possible extradition to Spain.
