Mourners came out Friday morning to honour victims of the deadly van attack that took place along Las Ramblas in Barcelona the previous day. Eyewitness Liam Searle gave his account of events.
«The van was coming down the rambler and I was completely unaware of it until it was pretty much alongside me and at this point I saw everyone from the bars start running,» he said. «I jumped off my... Еще skateboard and ran for the nearest building. Everyone just panicked, everyone ran.»
A white Fiat van was seen on Thursday afternoon running off Las Ramblas and into pedestrians outside the Placa de Catalunya metro station in Barcelona, leaving 13 dead and injuring a further 100 people.
The attack was followed by a similar incident in nearby Cambrils, when five suspected attackers were killed by police gunmen in the coastal town early on Friday morning after reportedly driving an Audi A3 into a group of pedestrians, only hours after a similar attack rocked Barcelona. The suspected assailants are alleged to have been wearing explosive belts. Seven people were injured in the Cambrils ramming.
The attacks have been claimed by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL).
Police are now linking the two incidents with an explosion that took place early on Thursday morning in the town of Alcanar Platja. It was initially believed to be a gas cylinder explosion, but is now reportedly connected to the assemblage of a bomb by the militant group that carried out Thursday’s and Friday’s attacks.
