Spain: Emergency services battle forest fires after 3,000 hectares scorched in Ourense

Eleven fires have burned almost 3,000 hectares of land in the province of Ourense between Sunday and Monday. According to the Councillor for Rural Affairs of the Government of Galicia, Jose Gonzalez, all the fires were started intentionally. Footage shows firefighters, members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME ) and residents of the area trying to put out the flames. “The fire started yesterday between Flariz and San Martino, yesterday at 17:00 [15:00 GMT] in the afternoon or so,» said Xose Covelo, a resident of the area. According to reports, the town most affected by the flames was Cualedro, where to date more than 500 hectares and four homes have been burned. The high temperatures and strong wind had the fire services on alert, but they were nevertheless overwhelmed by the fires.
