Spain: Demonstrators burn Spanish flags on anniv of ruling that sent pro-independence leaders to prison in Barcelona

A group of protesters burned Spanish flags and set up barricades on Wednesday, in a protest called by the Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR), on the anniversary of the sentencing of several Catalan independence leaders, in Barcelona. The protesters gathered in Urquinaona Square and marched down Via Laietana to the National Police Headquarters. Protesters could be seen tearing down Spanish flags from street lights and burning them, and blocking streets with bins and flower pots. On October 15, 2019, the Spanish Supreme Court imposed prison sentences of between nine and 13 years on nine Catalan pro-independence leaders for the crime of sedition following the attempt to hold a referendum on independence in Catalonia, which had been declared illegal by the Spanish justice system. After the sentence, violent protests took place in Barcelona and several other Catalan cities.
