Еще afternoon of August 17, a van ploughed into pedestrians on the popular tourist destination, Las Ramblas. A total of 14 people were killed and over a hundred were injured. The attack was followed by similar incident in the nearby coastal town of Cambrils, where an Audi A3 was driven into a group of pedestrians, injuring seven people. Police fatally shot five suspected assailants as they left the vehicle. The attackers were wearing fake-explosive belts. The attacks have been claimed by the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL), though it is unclear as to the level of the group's involvement. The blast was initially believed to have been a gas cylinder explosion, but has since been reportedly connected to the assemblage of a bomb by the group that carried out the attacks.
