Spain: Catalonia announces new restrictions to slow the increase of coronavirus cases

Several members of the Catalan Government held a press conference on Friday in Barcelona to announce new restrictions aimed at slowing the new outbreak of coronavirus. Meritxell Budo, counselor to the Presidency and spokesperson for the Generalitat of Catalonia, stated that «if the current evolution of the pandemic continues, we will have to take more drastic decisions very soon,» and assured that this is «the last opportunity to avoid making a huge change in containment measures for the entire population, and especially in a very important part of the Barcelona metropolitan area”. Given the proliferation of outbreaks, the regional government decided on Friday morning to ban meetings of more than 10 people and to limit the capacity of bars in the Barcelona metropolitan area. These measures will initially last 15 days, though they may be extended depending on the evolving situation.
