A Senate Member for Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (the Republican Left of Catalonia), Mireia Cortes, finished her speech in the Spanish parliament and then proceeded to hand the Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy a guide to the region, Friday. Cortes also shouted 'Visca la Republica Catalana' ('Long live the Catalan Republic') at the end of her speech. The book, Catalunya Para Espanoles... Еще (Catalonia For Spaniards) by sociologist Salvador Giner, analyses Catalan society throughout history and its relationship with the rest of the country. The Prime Minister wasn't left completely red-faced, however, as he responded by handing Cortes a copy of the Spanish constitution in a nod towards Madrid deeming the October 1st independence referendum 'illegal' and 'unconstitutional'. Both parties received an ovation from the house.
