Spain: Catalan president rejects judge’s decision to overturn Lleida confinement order

The President of Catalonia Quim Torra said he did not accept the judicial decision that rejects the COVID-19 confinement measures introduced in the Segria region, including the area of Lleida. He made the remarks during a press conference in Barcelona on Monday.
«We do not agree with this judicial decision, we do not accept it,» said Torra, who added that he assumes «all the consequences that may follow» from this decision, but that he cannot «endanger the health of the people.” Torra has announced that he «will approve a decree to establish a plan for outbreaks and to be able to act with all the forcefulness that is necessary.”
These statements come after a judge's decision to ban the tightening of confinement measures in the Lleida region of Segria, saying he considered it a state competence for which regional administrations should ask the central government for permission.
According to data published by the Spanish Ministry of Health on Friday, Spain has registered a total of 253,908 positive coronavirus cases and 28,403 related deaths since the pandemic began.
