Spain: Barcelona protest near National Police HQ turns violent

Police forces clashed with members of pro-independence action group Committees for the Defence of the Republic (CDR) in front of the National Police Headquarters in Barcelona on Saturday. Around 10,000 people participated in what started out as a peaceful demonstration, but tensions rose and clashes ensued between protesters and police. Streets were blocked and fires were lit by protesters, to... Еще which police responded with tear gas and other projectiles. «This shows the type of police we have. It is repressive police that does not let us manifest in peace and freedom,» said one protester who was shot in the side by police by what he claimed was a «foam bullet» as he was peacefully participating in a sit-in. According to reports, the Barcelona Medical Emergency System (SEM) treated 46 people for injuries received during Saturday's events. Protests started in Barcelona and other major cities of Catalonia after nine pro-independence leaders, who had organised the 2017 independence referendum, were found guilty of sedition, disobedience or misuse of public funds and were sentenced to between nine and 13 years in prison by the Supreme Court of Madrid. Since they began, hundreds have been injured in clashes and dozens placed under arrest.
