Spain: Armed police patrol Las Ramblas as tourists return to Barcelona streets

Tourists and local residents attempted to return to their daily routines in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas area, Friday morning, following a deadly van attack the previous day. Tourists gave personal accounts of experience. A white Fiat van was seen on Thursday afternoon running off Las Ramblas and into pedestrians outside the Placa de Catalunya metro station in Barcelona, leaving 13 dead and injuring... Еще a further 100 people. The attack was followed by a similar incident in nearby Cambrils, when five suspected attackers were killed by police gunmen in the coastal town early on Friday morning after reportedly driving an Audi A3 into a group of pedestrians, only hours after a similar attack rocked Barcelona. The suspected assailants are alleged to have been wearing explosive belts. Seven people were injured in the Cambrils ramming. The attacks have been claimed by the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS, ISIL). Police are now linking the two incidents with an explosion that took place early on Thursday morning in the town of Alcanar Platja. It was initially believed to be a gas cylinder explosion, but is now reportedly connected to the assemblage of a bomb by the militant group that carried out Thursday’s and Friday’s attacks.
