South Korea: Seoul welcomes N. Korean response to re-opening communications channel

South Korean Unification Ministry spokesperson Baik Tae-hyun said he welcomes North Korea's positive response to the idea of re-opening a communications channel in the border village of Panmunjom, in Seoul, on Wednesday. On Tuesday, the South Korean government proposed holding high-level talks with North Korea on January 9 over their possible involvement in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. This followed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's New Year's speech, in which he stated that Pyongyang was «open to dialogue» with South Korea, and added that a North Korean team may attend the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.
