South Korea: Seoul suspends defence drill due to 'changing security circumstances' on Korean Peninsula

Seoul said they would halt this year's Ulchi annual defence drill, slated for August, «due to changing security circumstances» on the Korean Peninsula, South Korean Interior and Safety Minister Kim Boo-kyum announced at a press briefing following a weekly Cabinet meeting, in Seoul on Tuesday. Kim said, «The government has decided to temporarily suspend the Ulchi exercise slated for later this... Еще year, in accordance with the changing security circumstances and earlier decisions to halt joint military drills between South Korea and the US.» South Korean Defence Minister Song Young-moo, who also spoke at the press briefing, noted that Seoul is set to carry out its own «standalone military exercises» in a bid to «maintain its readiness.» In June, South Korea and the US announced that they would suspend the joint Freedom Guardian military exercise, which takes place in tandem with the Ulchi drill. The announcement came following US President Donald Trump's pledge to «end war games» on the Korean Peninsula during the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
