Delegates from North and South Korea met in Panmunjom on Tuesday to discuss Pyongyang's possible involvement in the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics as well as further ways to improve ties. The meeting was the first round of formal talks to have taken place between the two countries in over two years. Chairman of the Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Country, Ri Son Gwon... Еще, headed a five-member North Korean negotiation team. At the meeting, he sat directly opposite his South Korean counterpart, Cho Myoung-gyon. The meeting followed North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's New Year's speech, in which he stated that Pyongyang was «open to dialogue» with South Korea, and added that a North Korean team may attend the Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang. The communications channel has been closed since January 2016, when the former South Korean government shut down the Kaesong Industrial Complex, following Pyongyang's fourth nuclear test.
