South Korea: Chinese community celebrate Lunar New Year at PyeongChang Olympics

Members of the Chinese Olympic delegation, volunteers and media gathered at a restaurant next to Gangneung's Olympic village to celebrate the eve of the Lunar New Year of the Dog, Thursday. Athletes, volunteers and simple guests enjoyed a typical Chinese meal and indulge in all the typical Chinese New Year's celebration, with paper cuts, wish making and drinks. Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival or Lunar New Year, is an important Chinese festival celebrated at the turn of the traditional lunisolar Chinese calendar. Celebrations traditionally run from the evening preceding the first day, to the Lantern Festival on the 15th day of the first calendar month. The first day of the New Year falls on the new moon between 21 January and 20 February. In 2018, the first day of the Lunar New Year is on Friday, 16 February, initiating the year of the Dog.
