Locals in Olievenhoutbosch Township found a way to deliver food parcels to those in need by creating a wheelbarrow delivery system to distribute the food provided by the Mahlasedi Foundation for those struggling due to the coronavirus crisis, as seen in footage filmed on Monday.
«Because the parcels are very heavy, we use our wheelbarrows and our trolleys to carry, to transport those things and... Еще then we charge them. Because we cannot wake up at eight in the morning and standing long queues for nothing. So we charge them, maybe, it depends on the distance. So they give us money and then, so that we can also save our families,» said a local student.
The delivery service, which is made up by around 150 wheelbarrows, is offered for a fee in exchange for not having to wait in long queues in the sun, as well as not having to carry the heavy parcels home for a long distance.
South Africa's lockdown measures left many of the country's day workers jobless and struggling to make ends meet.
According to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University, South Africa reported 7,220 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus with 138 related deaths.
