At least 23 people were killed in gun battle and hostage situation between police and al-Shabaab attackers at a central hotel in Mogadishu, Somalia on Sunday, as ten hour stand-off came to an end. Former Somalian MPs, civilians and multiple police officers are among the victims of the attack. Police finally brought the situation under control by fatally shooting two of the Al-Shabaab... Еще attackers and arresting three others. Al-Shabaab had stormed the hotel and taken hostages following the detonation of an explosives-laden vehicle at the hotel entrance gate. The group was ousted from Mogadishu in 2011 and have been losing territory ever since, but their capacity to launch large bomb attacks has continued. Al-Shabaab's troop strength was estimated at 7,000 to 9,000 militants in 2014, and is engaged in combat against the Federal Government of Somalia and the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM).
