Russia beat Norway 5:2 in the opening game of group B of the IIHF World Championship in Bratislava on Friday. Speaking after the match, Russia captain Ilya Kovalchuk said he was pleased with the result but not with the performance of his team.
Russia Coach Ilya Vorobyov was also satisfied with the result, noting an excellent use of a powerplay but he said the two conceded goals were 'undesirable... Еще'.
The Red Machine took the lead from the start despite Norwegian attempts to apply pressure. Ilya Vorobyov's squad used their first three powerplay opportunities in the first and second periods. Evgeni Dadonov scored twice after Evgeni Malkin's assists, while NHL regular season's top-scorer Nikita Kucherov also punished the Norwegians for a penalty. Nikita Gusev scored 5th goal at the start of the third period.
But the Isbjørnene (The Polar Bears) managed to score twice in the third period thanks to late goals by Thomas Valkvae Olsen and Jonas Holos.
