Serbia: War veterans block Serbian Pres. from reaching village in Kosovo

Scores of protesters from the Drenica region of Kosovo blocked the streets leading to the village of Banje in the Skenderaj region on Sunday, to prevent Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic from visiting the area. War veterans and local residents used trucks and cars to block the street, while placing signs all over the road. For the major of Skenderaj area Bekim Jashari «the president of... Еще Serbia cannot pass without apologising for the victims and the massacres that happen in 1999.» «We have 15,000 people dead in the war and we, in our municipality, we have 128 people missing,» Jashari said, adding that he will stand in solidarity with his fellow citizens. The Serbian President is visiting the area of Kosovo as part of bilateral efforts to address issues which still hang over the region since the 1998-1999 war. The suggested land swap deal between Serbia and Kosovo would see the Presevo Valley in southern Serbia, populated mostly by ethnic Albanians, join Kosovo, and in exchange Serbia would regain control over an area in north Kosovo, which is populated mostly by ethnic Serbs. Earlier in the day, Vucic cancelled a visit to the village of Banje in Kosovo after 200 Kosovo war veterans blocked the road leading to it in protest. Scheduled talks in Brussels on Friday didn't go to plan after Vucic refused to directly meet with his Kosovan counterpart Hashin Thaci.
