Serbia: Traditional bonfires herald Orthodox Christmas Eve celebrations

Orthodox Christians celebrated Christmas Eve in front of the Church of Saint Sava in Belgrade on Saturday, with a traditional oak-tree bonfire, called a «badnjak.» Several hundred believers attended the ceremony, which was led by Serbian Patriarch Irinej, who blessed the oak fonds prior to burning. In Serbia, Christmas is celebrated on January 7, as per the Orthodox tradition.
