Pope Francis was struck by what appeared to be an item of clothing while travelling en route to an open-air mass in O'Higgins Park in the capital Santiago on Tuesday. The pontiff is on his first visit to Chile since he became head of the Catholic Church in 2013. Over 400,000 worshippers attended the event. At the mass for peace and justice, Francis called upon the faithful to «work for peace... Еще». Earlier in the day, the 81-year-old pontiff gave a speech alongside President Michele Bachelet, in which he expressed his «embarrassment and pain» at historic child sex abuse accusations against the Catholic Church in Chile. Protests against an alleged cover-up of sex abuse by religious authorities are expected during Francis' three-day stay. Over the weekend, several churches were attacked and vandalised. The Pope will continue his tour of Latin America in Peru on Thursday.
