Russian mother carries wheelchair-bound son up and down stairs for 18 years

Svetlana Ivchenko has spent the past eighteen years carrying her wheelchair-bound son Fyodor up and down the stairs, ever since an accessible entrance to the block of flats was blocked by a wall. Svetlana described their daily life during an interview in Kamyshin on Monday. Their flat is situated on the fourth floor of the apartment block. Even though it has an elevator, Fyodor must resort to... Еще travelling up the stairwell as his wheelchair does not fit into it. When Svetlana first bought the flat in 1994, the entrance hall was equipped with a big door which the wheelchair could go through. However, since the year 2,000 the door has been blocked by a brick wall because of a dispute with a business owner. Svetlana said she has complained to authorities about the wall, but so far «all my official questions turned futile.»
