Russia: World’s first petrol painting school opens

The world’s first petrol painting school has opened in a village near Syktyvkar in Russia’s Komi Republic. Here students use petrol instead of water colours and gouache. The technique is unique and it is taught by the St. Petersburg artist Vitaly Kasatkin. “This all happened unexpectedly. I worked on the technique of relief painting,” he said. And one day he was advised to try petrol as... Еще painting material. Black liquid has many shades, the artist explains. “It gives a beautiful combination of colours,” he said. The Museum of Petroleum Art, which is the first and the only in the world — is to open in the Ethno Cultural Park of the Republic of Komi. All the exhibits are signed by the same name — Vitaly Kasatkin — as he is the first and so far only professional artist who paints with petrol.
