Russia: Thousands attend funeral of Russian hero pilot who died in Syria

Large numbers of people were seen arriving at a cemetery in Voronezh on Thursday to pay their final respects to the Hero of the Russian Federation, Major Roman Filipov, who died in Syria last week. The Russian Ministry of Defence says Filipov’s jet was “attacked with a short-range man-portable air defence system (MANPADS/MPADS) while flying over the Idlib de-escalation zone [in Syria] to monitor a ceasefire.” The pilot was forced to eject from the aircraft and then blew himself up with a grenade as several dozens of militants closed in on his position, according to the Russian MoD. The pilot was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation.
