Russia: ‘The strongest survives’ — Frank Vercauteren on Russia's WC stride

SOT, Franky Vercauteren, former Belgian football left winger and football manager (English): «You didn't expect, maybe, but I think they were as much favourites as Spain. I don't know why you should all at once say that Spain was favourite against Russia. You know the quality, you know when the team is playing in front of their own people, they can always have a boost, they can do some extra. And... Еще I think the difference was not that big. So why not take the same chances as Spain since the beginning of the game.» *JUMP CUT AT SOURCE* Former Belgian football left winger and football manager Franky Vercauteren commented on Russia's victory over Spain and its progression to the quarterfinals of the World Cup for the first time since 1970, in an interview in Samara on Sunday. «Russia kept the quality, they kept control of emotions, control of frustrations, they were really concentrated when they kicked, they did what they had to do. So I think mentally during the penalty kicks they were the strongest. The strongest survives, the strongest continues,» Vercauteren said. He added that Spain was not really able to say they were better and the difference was not that big. «I think a lot is possible for Russia,» Vercauteren concluded. Russia reached the World Cup quarterfinal following a 4-3 penalty victory against Spain at Moscow's Luzhniki stadium on Sunday. Russia is now set to face Croatia on Saturday in Sochi.
