Russia: Syrian air defences intercept 71 of 103 missiles — MoD

Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the Russian General Staff of the Russian armed forces Sergei Rudskoy said that a number of Syrian military airfields, industrial and research facilities «have been bombed» by the US and allies during a press briefing in Moscow on Saturday. Rudskoy mentioned that «no casualties» among civilians and Syrian army were recorded. He went on to say that 71... Еще out of 103 missiles «were intercepted» by Syrian air defence systems, which are mainly equipped with «Soviet-made air defence complexes.» «This testifies to the high efficiency of the weapons in Syria and the excellent skills of the Syrian military personnel trained by our specialists,» concluded Rudskoy. Russian MoD representative stated that the US-led strike is not a response to an alleged chemical attack, but a «reaction to success of the Syrian armed forces in the struggle to liberate their territory from international terrorism,» adding that «the airstrike was conducted precisely on the day when a special mission of the OPCW was supposed to start the investigation.» The US, UK and France have launched airstrikes against multiple government targets in Damascus early on Saturday morning, targeting alleged chemical weapons sites as well as a Syrian military base in Homs. The airstrikes are a response to the claims of an alleged chemical weapons attack on Douma last week. Syria and Russia have both denied the allegations, calling them 'staged' and a 'fabrication.'
