Russia: State Duma ratifies Tartus naval base agreement with Syria

The Russian State Duma endorsed the expansion agreement of the Russian military port in the Syrian coastal city of Tartus, in Moscow on Thursday. Vyacheslav Volodin, Chairman of the State Duma said that the agreement represents an «expanding territory of financial and technical support post of the Russian Navy in the area of the Port of Tartus and warships’ entry to the territorial sea, inland... Еще waters and ports of the Syrian Arab Republic.» State Secretary-Deputy Defense Minister Nikolai Pankov noted that the «agreement establishes the right of the Russian Federation to keep about 11 warships, including warships with nuclear power plants.» According to the Duma Deputy Alexei Chepa, it is «necessary to keep the Russian military presence in this country as the main factor stabilising the environment in the region” for “maintaining the peace on the Syrian territory.» The deal covers the period of 49 years but can be automatically prolonged for a period of 25 years, unless the parties send a written notification to the other one year prior to the termination of the agreement.
