Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova claimed the targeted assassination of Iran’s Quds Force General Qasem Soleimani will «result in another escalation of tension round in the region» on Friday.
«We identify this Washington step as the step with big consequences for regional peace and stability. We assume that such moves don’t promote in searching for difficult situations... Еще denouement which accumulated in the Middle East and that will result in another escalation of tension round in the region,» added Zakharova in audio statements given to All-Russia State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company (VGTRK).
Zakharova also said that the US authorities’ actions will «lead to the enhancing of consolidation of those people, whom Washington considers to be its enemies.»
«The situation in the region would hit those countries’ population. There are millions of them. This, of course, will cause new shock waves in the region. But the US authorities are worried about people’s lives for a long time by deploying or redeploying their troops and building policy in the region, aren’t they? Because the US authorities have also claimed that the basement of their actions is worrying about people’s future and preservation of democracy,» stressed Zakharova.
In addition, the diplomat focused on Iraq’s reaction on Soleimani’s assassination.
«The acting prime minister of this sovereign state regarded the airstrike against Baghdadi’s airport, when [Qasem] Soleimani was killed, as an 'act of aggression' against his country,» said Zakharova, adding that this reaction is the most important among hundreds of other statements.
Soleimani was killed in an airstrike at Baghdad's international airport in the early hours of Friday morning, alongside Jamal Jafaar Mohammed Ali Ebrahimi, the leader of Iraq's Popular Mobilization Forces (Hashd al-Shaabi).
The Pentagon released a statement confirming the US had carried out the airstrike at the order of US President Donald Trump, calling it a «decisive defensive action to protect US personnel abroad.» Iran's Minister of Defense Amir Hatami has said that «A crushing revenge will be taken for Soleimani's unjust assassination».
