A lawyer for Russian movie and theatre director Kirill Serebrennikov said his client would appeal Meshchansky District Court's decision to sentence him to three years of probation, speaking outside the court in Moscow on Friday.
«We are going to appeal. We do not think that any damage was caused to Russian Culture Ministry. We repeated it many times. Russian Culture Ministry was unable to formulate what damage was caused to it. Its accusations are based on biased and incompetent expertise,» said Dmitri Kharitonov.
The court earlier found Serebrennikov guilty of embezzlement and gave him a three-year suspended sentence and an 800,000 rouble (€10,200, $11,500) fine.
The prosecution had requested the court sentence the director to six years in a penal colony.
Serebrennikov was detained in August 2017 with three other people on charges of misusing 129 million roubles (€1.6m, $1.8m) of state funds allocated for the Platform project between 2011-2014.
