Russia: Putin discusses easing of COVID-19 restrictions with top officials

Russian President Vladimir Putin chaired an online meeting with the government on Wednesday in Novo-Ogaryovo on the timeline to ease lockdown measures meant to stop the spread of coronavirus. Putin said the restrictions should be lifted gradually to avoid a new wave of infections. «The price of the slightest mistake is the safety, life, and health of our people. Therefore, the responsibility for... Еще each decision is extremely high,» he said. On his turn, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, who also heads Russia’s coronavirus taskforce, explained that the number of infections in the Russian capital has stayed mostly stable in the last few weeks, adding that total count is higher because of wider testing. “I think that stopping the self-isolation regime and preventive measures for the service sector is premature. The situation we are observing now doesn't allow us to open the service sector completely. But it gives us an opportunity to make a decision from May 12 to allow opening of all industrial and construction enterprises,» said Sobyanin. On Wednesday, Russia recorded more than 10,000 new COVID-19 cases for the fourth day in a row. The total number of cases since the beginning of the epidemic now stands at 165,929. With 86 deaths attributed to coronavirus in the last day, the number of victims is now at 1,537.
