Russia: Putin backs proposal for Ukraine prisoner exchange

Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the proposition for an exchange of prisoners between Ukraine and the self-proclaimed Republics of Donesk and Lugansk, saying he would «do everything depending on him», while looking around the New Jerusalem Monastery in the Russian town of Istra on Wednesday. Leader of the social movement ‘Ukrainian Choice’ Victor Medvedchuk raised the subject to Putin... Еще, saying, «I would like to address you with a request concerning hundreds of people who are currently on both sides of the contact line in the East.» The proposal was also backed by the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow who emphasised the church's humanitarian role in such conflicts, saying, «people are suffering and are victims of this dire conflict, which indeed brings about suffering.» Under the Minsk agreement, the prisoners' exchange should be implemented on the basis of the «all for all» principle, meaning that all prisoners situated in Ukraine will be exchanged for all prisoners in the self-proclaimed Republics. Medvedchuk urged the Russian president to talk to the leaders of Donetsk and Lugansk.
