Russia: Povetkin beats Hammer, clearing way to WBA champion title

Povetkin (Russian): «I don't believe that our sportsmen are to blame for anything. This is politics. It is the same as with me. Ostarin and meldonium remain in the body for a long time. How could I regularly be tested and clean and just before the fight become some kind bad person, that can't happen.» Reporter (Russian): «What about [going to] the Olympics with neutral flag?» Povetkin (Russian... Еще): «With the neutral flag –it is right. It is up to each sportsman to decide.» Reporter (Russian): «Hammer said you would not win without doping. Did you take revenge?» Povetkin (Russian): «His goal was not to win, but to walk away by himself after the fight.» Russian heavyweight boxer Alexander Povetkin beat his Romanian counterpart Christian Hammer in a final world heavyweight eliminator in Ekaterinburg on Friday. Next in line for Povetkin is either Anthony Joshua or Joseph Parker in his attempt to win a WBA super champion title. Friday’s match ended with scores of 120-107, 120-108 and 119-108. When asked about the pressure he experienced lately due to the doping scandals, Povetkin said, «I don't believe that our sportsmen are to blame for anything. This is politics. It is the same as with me.» Talking about his counterpart Hammer, he added «his goal was not to win, but to walk away by himself after the fight.»
