Russia: 'Open competitions' to be held for athletes prevented from Paralympics — RPC Pres

The Russian Paralympic Committee held a meeting with athletes and specialists in cross-country skiing, biathlon, alpine skiing and curling before the departure to the final training activities on the eve of the XII Paralympic Winter Games 2018 in Moscow, Friday. According to Marta Zaynullina, Russian female Paralympic cross-country skier and biathlete, the athletes «would like to represent our... Еще country and wear the [Olympic] outfit [with Russian symbols] and hear the anthem of Russia on the pedestal, but considering all the circumstances, it's better than nothing.» The President of the Russian Paralympic Committee Vladimir Lukin emphasised that «there is the principle of [assumption of] innocence,» adding that «In accordance with this principle, if you are innocent, then you cannot be punished. If you are suspected of something, then your guilt must be proven in a certain way in court.» He announced that Russian athletes would be able to take part in the open competitions, which would be organised in Russia. The International Paralympic Committee [IPC] has not yet given a positive or negative response to his request to allocate additional quotas for the participation of Russian skiers and biathletes in the Paralympic Games in Pyeongchang. Previously, Russian skiers and biathletes have not been declared by the Russian Paralympic Committee to participate in the Paralympic Games, as the IPC ran out of quotas in the male part of the program in these disciplines.
