Russia: Netherlands will not ‘tolerate cyberattacks’ — Dutch ambassador summoned to MFA

Dutch Ambassador to Russia Renee Jones-Bos stated that the Netherlands «cannot tolerate cyberattacks on international organisations,» after a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in Moscow on Monday. The Dutch representative was summoned to the ministry over what the MFA has described as a «misinformation campaign» launched in The Hague. «I explained to the Russian Minister of... Еще Foreign Affairs that the Netherlands feels responsible for international organisations on its territory, the OPCW,» Jones-Bos said. «We cannot tolerate cyberattacks on international organisations. And that is what was made clear by the Minister of Defence of the Netherlands,» she added. The Netherlands expelled four Russian nationals in April over suspicion of their involvement in the alleged cyberattack on the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' (OPCW) headquarters. Dutch Defence Minister Ank Bijleveld-Schouten accused Russia's military intelligence agency, the GRU, of trying to sabotage OPCW's work on investigations including on the downing of the MH17 jet and on the Salisbury nerve agent attack. In a press conference earlier on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the four men accused by the Dutch of spying were on «a routine visit» in The Hague. «They were detained, nothing was explained to them, they were not allowed to contact Russian representatives in our embassy in the Netherlands, they were just asked to leave,» the foreign minister said, adding he believed that it was a «misunderstanding.»
