Russia: Mourinho cautions Russia against overoptimism after Saudi Arabia trouncing

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said that the Russian football team should not become overly optimistic following their convincing victory over Saudi Arabia in the opening match of the 2018 World Cup at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on Thursday. «Before the match we were talking about the Russians being so pessimistic and I don’t think you have a reason to be super optimistic, but be happy... Еще, good victory, good score,» he said. «The goals could be important if you finish on the same number of points as, let’s say, Egypt. But not to be so optimistic because Saudi disappointed me. I watched them against Germany, I know it was a friendly, but they looked better than today,» Mourinho said. He also described the Russia team’s performance as «fine» because they played to their strengths with a «compact» defence and attempts to find weaknesses in the Saudi Arabian team. During the interview, Mourinho complimented Golovin’s shift to a more central position. «The team became better. Golovin is a playmaker, he’s a player that gives the dynamic of the team,» he said. Russia will face Egypt on 19 June while Saudi Arabia will play Uruguay on 20 June. The Portuguese coach will appear as RT's special guest host during the World Cup. World Cup 2018 will be held in 11 Russian cities from June 14 to July 15, with a total of 32 teams competing for the trophy.
