Russia: Moscow wakes up to colourful carnival ahead of World Festival of Youth and Students

A colourful carnival took place in Moscow on Saturday, ahead of the 2017 World Festival of Youth and Students. Over 35 thousand Russian and foreign students participated in the carnival, paving the way to the XIX edition of the international festival. Commenting on the festival unfolding amid the current tense international atmosphere, participants pointed out its importance. They argued that such events give «students from different countries, some of which are on the brink of war» the chance to talk, go «beyond the politics» and «understand each other as human beings.» Participants expressed hope that «from little steps» like that «world peace» could be attained. The opening ceremony of the XIX International Festival of Youth and Students will be held on October 15 in Sochi, host city of the festival's main events.
