Russia: Moscow court sentences protester to 3 years for assaulting officer

Moscow’s Tverskoy District Court on Wednesday sentenced 26-year-old activist and student Kirill Zhukov to three years in penal colony for assaulting a National Guard officer during an unauthorised rally in Moscow on July 27. Zhukov was found guilty of an offense under Part 1 of Art. 318 of the Criminal Code of Russia, which is «The use of violence against a government official that is not... Еще dangerous to health». According to the court, Zhukov knocked down an officer by hitting him in the face while trying to remove his helmet. Zhukov pleaded not guilty. Svetlana Baiturina, Zhukov's lawyer, called the verdict «a very strict punishment, which has no meaning and purpose.» “I believe that this is a big mistake on the part of the state and the court to trial these kind of people,” Baiturina added.
