Russia: Moscow court sentences investor William Browder in absentia

A Moscow court issued a nine-year in absentia penal colony sentence to US-born founder of the Hermitage Capital investment fund, William Browder, convicting him of deliberate bankruptcy and 4.6 billion rouble ($79mn, €66mn) tax evasion on Friday. The court found that Browder and his business partner Ivan Cherkasov had run an offshore tax evasion scheme between 1995 and 2007 causing the Russian... Еще state 3.4 billion rouble ($59mn, €49mn) in damages. Cherkasov was handed an eight-year jail sentence. The defence attorneys plan to appeal the sentencing.
