The Chairman of the Italian National Parachute Association Adriano Tokki called Prokhorenko’s death «an act of international importance.» Prokhorenko died in March 2016 near Palmyra, Syria, after ordering an airstrike on his own position, when he was surrounded by fighters of the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL). Russian President Vladimir Putin posthumously awarded the lieutenant with the nation's highest honourary title, the Hero of Russia.
