Russia: Military holds minute's silence in honour of hero pilot

Russian military personnel in Tver Region held a minute's silence on Thursday in honour of Hero of Russia Major Roman Filipov, who died in Syria last week. Dozens of officers held the silence and fired their guns during the commemorative service that took place at Migalovo Airbase, where the Russian Air Force is set to hold drills later in the day. Major Filipov will have a military funeral... Еще later on Thursday at the Alley of Heroes in the city's cemetery. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, Filipov's jet was «attacked with a short-range man-portable air defence system (MANPADS/MPADS) while flying over the Idlib de-escalation zone to monitor a ceasefire.» The pilot was forced to eject from the aircraft and then blew himself up with a grenade as several dozens of militants closed in on his position. The 33-year-old pilot was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation, the Kremlin's highest honour.
